Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the impact of this disaster.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you encounter situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process here the sheer magnitude of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck without warning, destroying entire cities in its wake. Buildings crumbled like sandcastles, and the roar that followed was deafening. Thousands were left beneath debris, their fate unknown. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to confront a future forever scarred.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, struggling against time and dangerous conditions to rescue those still trapped. The world watched in horror as the full magnitude of the disaster became apparent, offering condolences to the affected population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with my case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was hurrying out the door, I trippedover and with a thud all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for a very important appointment.
I flustered. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. fell apart. I stay awake.
By the time I reached my destination, I was completely drained. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
